Founding Chairman’s Word
A new name represents new ideas, new ambitions and new responsibilities.
Medical Conscience was born amid the stormy days of 2020, when medics of Hong Kong took to the streets to selectively call for a full border closure with the Mainland, leaving their patients behind and services unattended, when medical organizations fended for law breakers, befoul universal covid testing and discouraged vaccinations – all working to push Hong Kong down a slippery slope of no return. We took it upon our shoulders to exemplify the conduct worthy of medical professionals, to the fulfillment of our duties to all patients. That is why we are formed.
We reemphasize the principle of no prejudice, of treating all with different skin colours, beliefs, origins and jobs the same with the best of our abilities. We encouraged colleagues in private practice to take up public duties against the pandemic. We organized talks and communicated extensively with people of all walks, answering queries they may have on the covid vaccines. We deployed doctors and nurses to man a Community Vaccination Centre. It is obvious to us that only by active participation in healthcare measures can we bring Hong Kong out of this pandemic.
This is an era when Peace, Liberty and Justice are not only needed but reappraised. Peace is insufficient unless people live in harmony with one another, where diversity is respected. Liberty includes that of the mind. For healthcare professionals, it is soul searching to define one’s own principle for building oneself to serve the people with mercy and love. Justice at the healthcare level is the provision of public service so that no one will be deprived of adequate healthcare due to a lack of means.
Medical organizations and unions have for years made claims as representing the profession. We saw them biased towards the interests of the profession over social justice. Medical Conscience focuses on social justice with respect to healthcare policies rather than self-interests. In my 20 years of service in public affairs, I have always believed that the long-term healthcare interest of the public is in line with the long-term interest of the medical profession. I remain true to my belief.
If you share our beliefs, you are most welcome to join us.
